Ingredients:

For the caramel sauce:

  • 1 cup of granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup of water

For the flan:

  • 1 can of sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 can of evaporated milk
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon of salt

Instructions:

To start, preheat your oven to 350 degrees F. In a saucepan, combine the granulated sugar and water for the caramel sauce. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the sugar dissolves and turns into a golden brown color. Immediately pour the caramel into a 9-inch round baking dish, tilting the dish to evenly coat the bottom. Set aside to cool.

In a mixing bowl, beat the sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk, eggs, vanilla extract, and salt until well combined. Pour the mixture over the cooled caramel in the baking dish.

Place the baking dish into a larger baking pan and fill the larger pan with hot water until it reaches about halfway up the sides of the baking dish. This will create a water bath for the flan to cook in.

Carefully transfer the pans to the oven and bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the flan is set. To check if it's done, insert a knife into the center of the flan. If it comes out clean, it's ready.

Once done, remove the flan from the oven and let it cool to room temperature. Then, cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight.

When ready to serve, run a knife along the edges of the dish and invert the flan onto a serving plate. The caramel sauce will now be on top. Serve and enjoy your delicious homemade flan!
