Ingredients
Dough:
2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast
1 cup warm water
1 tablespoon granulated sugar
2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
Soda Bath:
8 cups water
½ cup baking soda
Instructions
1. Prepare the Dough
To make the dough, dissolve the active dry yeast and granulated sugar in warm water in a large mixing bowl. Let it sit for 5 minutes until it becomes foamy. In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour and salt. Pour the dry ingredients into the yeast mixture and add the melted butter. Use your hands or a dough hook to mix the ingredients until a smooth dough forms.
2. Knead and Let Rise
On a lightly floured surface, knead the dough for about 5 minutes until it becomes elastic. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour.
3. Shape the Pretzels
Preheat your oven to 450°F (232°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. In a large pot, bring the water and baking soda to a boil. While the water is heating up, divide the dough into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long rope and shape it into a pretzel.
4. Dip in Soda Bath
Once the water is boiling, carefully place each pretzel in the pot for about 30 seconds. Use a slotted spoon to remove them and place them on the prepared baking sheet.
5. Bake and Enjoy!
Bake the pretzels for 10-12 minutes until they turn golden brown. Serve warm with your favorite dipping sauce, such as honey mustard or cheese sauce. These new year pretzels are best enjoyed fresh out of the oven, but they can also be stored in an airtight container for a few days.
With their soft and chewy texture and irresistible flavor, these homemade pretzels are sure to become a new year tradition in your household. Give this recipe a try and impress your loved ones with your baking skills. Happy new year!
