Ingredients
1. Malted Barley
The base of any good ale is the malted barley, and for our Easter Ale, we recommend using a combination of pale malt and caramel malt. The pale malt will give our ale a light and crisp flavor, while the caramel malt adds a touch of sweetness and depth. You can find these malts at your local homebrew store or online.
2. Hops
Hops are an essential ingredient in any beer, providing bitterness and aroma. For our Easter Ale, we recommend using Hallertau hops for their floral and spicy notes. You'll also need a small amount of East Kent Goldings hops for a touch of earthiness.
3. Spices
To give our Easter Ale that special holiday twist, we'll be adding some ground cinnamon and ground nutmeg. These warm and festive spices will complement the flavors of the malt and hops, creating a perfect balance in our ale.
Instructions
1. Mashing
Start by heating about 3 gallons of water in your brew kettle to 152°F. Then, add your pale malt and caramel malt and stir well. Let the mixture sit for about an hour, allowing the enzymes in the malt to convert the starches into fermentable sugars.
2. Boiling
After the hour is up, bring the wort (the liquid extracted from the malt) to a boil. Once boiling, add your Hallertau hops and let it boil for 45 minutes. Then, add the East Kent Goldings hops and boil for an additional 15 minutes.
3. Spicing
With 10 minutes left in the boil, add the ground cinnamon and ground nutmeg to the wort. This will infuse the spices into the ale, giving it that Easter flavor.
4. Cooling and Fermenting
Once the boil is complete, cool the wort to around 70°F and transfer it to a clean and sanitized fermenter. Add your yeast and let it ferment for about a week.
5. Bottling or Kegging
When the fermentation is complete, it's time to bottle or keg your Easter Ale. Make sure to add the appropriate amount of priming sugar to the bottles or keg to ensure proper carbonation.
Enjoy!
Congratulations, you've made your very own Easter Ale! Put it in the fridge to chill and enjoy it with your friends and family this holiday season. Cheers!
